The Allen County Sheriff's Reserve was formed in 1945. It is a professional, all volunteer organization that supports and supplements the Allen County Police Department, while providing service to the local community. The Reserve is an organization made up of over 100 well trained volunteer police officers. These men and women come from a wide range of civlilian and military backgrounds, from factory workers to bank executives and everything in between. Duties performed by Reserve officers save the taxpayers of Allen County hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. Many Reserve officers have gone on to become full time officers with the Allen County Police, the Fort Wayne Police, or other law enforcement agencies. Reserve officers are indeed front line police officers in Allen County, with all of the legal authority of their full time counterparts. Whether working at the County jail, responding to assignments while on patrol, or securing a perimeter for the County S.W.A.T. team, Reserve officers are important and integral members of the Allen County Police Department, and are active in nearly all of the various divisions of the regular department. One of the most visible divisions of the Reserve organization is the Traffic Division. Officers assigned to Traffic patrol the streets and roadways of the largest county in Indiana and respond to assignments dispatched from the County communications center. Allen County Police Reserves use some of the best equipment available. The Allen County Police Reserve, Inc. owns and operates its own training facility/banquet hall and event center. The 6,000 sq. ft. facility, equipped with a full kitchen serves as an important asset to the ACPR. The event center is rented out for wedding receptions, seminars, corporate meetings and social functions. The income helps to fund uniform and equipment purchases for the Reserve program. |
